Hi Reader,
If you’ve seen me the last couple months, you have seen my beautiful, flowing locks of hair.
I’m not going to lie, my hair was pretty epic.
Well, I shaved it all off.
You may have also heard me say that I wasn’t cutting it until I got to 200 pounds.
Well, I made it. I weighed in at 199.8 this morning.
Here’s the thing, 200 is not even my goal weight.
200 is just a milestone. I’ve lost 63 pounds and I’ve got more to lose still.
Here’s where my real problem was. I kept thinking that I would somehow “arrive” when I hit 200 pounds. My commitment to not cut my hair became a symbol of my “failure” to accomplish that particular goal, because it was right around the corner for so long.
I was focusing on the wrong thing. I was focusing on a number instead of the other things that matter so much more.
I am more present for my wife and kids. They are flourishing. I am feeling more confident and successful.
I am sticking to my commitments, not just to myself but to others as well. This feels amazing.
Shoot, I’m not perfect.
My goal to get to 200 pounds was focusing on the wrong thing.
It was a goal of achievement and if I’m not careful, hitting 200 pounds is going to make me think that I can relax my practices and commitments to myself.
So, I shaved my head as a reminder of the man I want to become. Every day, every temptation it reminds me to stick to my commitments, to be the person I want to be. To be the amazing Jethro that I can be, if I choose to live to my potential.
My mom said that I went from being a mad scientist to being a monk. 😛
Here’s the thing: I liked my long hair. I love the mad scientist look. I love how it makes me feel. I will grow my hair back out again.
I personally needed this daily reminder of who I want to become, because I have so far to go.
We do this in education all the time. We focus on the wrong thing. We focus on test scores, data, and “legislatively convenient” things because we think they make us worthy.
They don’t.
We are worthy just as we are.
People say that test scores drive so much in education, and that is only true because we allow it to be true.
It doesn’t have to be that way. I eschewed test scores as a principal and focused on other things. btw, our test scores went up.
Hold on…I’m starting to rant about something. Let’s end that rant!
The thing that has helped me lose so much weight has been my mindset and how I deal with the saboteurs that CONSTANTLY try to ruin all my hard work.
I would love to help you in this.
I’m doing a special Black Friday discount of my 6 week mental fitness coaching to help you practice how to overcome your saboteurs.
We will start our weekly meetings the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. and go each week (<45 minutes) for six weeks. You get two 1:1 coaching calls at the end to help you with a specific problem.
Every day, you’ll have short 3 minute exercises to help you strengthen 3 core mental muscles.
Each weekend, you’ll have some videos to watch asynchronously.
The key here is regular, intense practice over a few weeks to get good at being in control of your mind.
I only have 20 seats available.
My clients have had amazing things happen as a result of this short 6-week cycle. From dealing with deep family challenges to dealing with professional challenges to just living day-to-day in a better way. I’d love to have you join me.

February 09, 2026 I’ve been interested for a long time in the idea of soft skills. I even helped produce a podcast focused on this called Skilled by Design. Tom Bay has done a lot of work in this arena. As has Seth Godin. I recently found Dr. Marvin Berkowitz’s book PRIMED for Character Education: Six Design Principles for School Improvement to have the best definition, and one that I will adopt and use frequently. I only wish I had come up with it. I use the notions of organic vs. mechanical...
